Louise Ivey was born in Shaw, Mississippi on August 28, 1926. She came to Gary, Indiana in 1955 and opened Louise’s Kitchenette and Billiards at 17th and Broadway.
She joined the Gary Police Department in 1973 while attending Indiana University Northwest where she earned an associate’s degree in public affairs and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. In 1976, she was appointed director of the police community relations program where she instituted the National Night Out Against Crime, the Neighborhood Watch, Officer Friendly, and Junior Patrol programs.
Louise Ivey passed away on April 13, 1997.
