BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Born on April 13, 1948 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Sam Bushemi and Pearl Maranto, John P. Bushemi became one the Calumet area’s best known and respected state legislators.  After graduating from Andrean High School, John attended Indiana University in Bloomington where he was awarded a degree in political science.  In 1973, John P. Bushemi graduated from the Indiana University School of Law in Bloomington. After graduation from law school, John returned to the Calumet area where he currently practices law in Merrillville and is engaged in civil trial practice in state and federal courts and municipal and local government law.

Shortly after receiving his law degree, John P. Bushemi began his 15 year legislative career by winning election in 1976 as State Senator to complete the term of Adam Benjamin, Jr. who had been elected to the United States Congress.  John was re-elected in 1978, 1982 and 1986.  As a State Senator, John served on the Budget Subcommittee and the Senate Finance Committee, the Civil Law Subcommittee and the Senate Judiciary Committee and was the Ranking Democratic member of the Senate Labor and Pensions Committee.  During his legislative career, John P. Bushemi also served on the Indiana Commission on the Aging and Aged, National Commission on State Government Operations, Indiana Commission on Autism, Indiana Judicial Study Commission, Indiana Code Revision Commission and the Casino Gaming Study Commission.

During his service in the State Senate, John P. Bushemi developed a reputation as a hard working and effective lawmaker.  During his 15 year legislative career, John had a 100 percent attendance record having participated in all 633 sessions of the Indiana Senate during that period.  John also had a 99 percent voting record on over 8,400 roll call votes.  John P. Bushemi was known for his dedication to constituent services.  John was a leading advocate for adoption of the Hoosier Lottery program.  He championed numerous Northwest Indiana development projects. John P. Bushemi was the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions for his service in the State Senate.  He is the son of former State Representative Sam Bushemi (1948-1954), the nephew of former State Representative Marion Bushemi (1960-1976) and cousin of former State Representative Victoria Caesar (1962-1968).
