Abstract
The Michael and Susanna Guba Family Papers trace the history of this Gary, Indiana family of Slovak heritage through much of the 20th century. The collection contains numerous documents and photographs, many of them related to Ruth Ellen Guba, the youngest child of Michael and Susanna, and her husband, John Ledwitch. Of particular interest is a typescript family history, located in Box 1, File1 of the collection. The narrative offers valuable insights into not only the family’s history but also life in the Steel City. The Gubas attended St. Michael’s Church (Byzantine) and later St. Mark’s Church, when the family moved to the Glen Park neighborhood. Schools attended by Guba children included Emerson, Glen Park, and Lew Wallace. Photographs depict family dwellings and activities from the 1930s into the 1960s, along with a series of photographs of John Ledwitch in the U.S. Coast Guard and at his job at the Inland Steel Company in East Chicago.
