Scope and Content

Although the railway has existed since 1903, the scope of this collection covers only 1965-1989, primarily focusing on the late 1970's. The early material covers the acquisition of the railway by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. The majority of the material covers the hard times of the passenger line and the attempt to discontinue it. There are also some photographs and a calendar commemoration the 75th Anniversary of the railroad.

Historical Sketch

The Chicago South Shore and South Bend Railroad was started in 1903. It has had a few ups and downs in its history, but it still continues to run and support passengers along a 90 mile strip from Chicago to South Bend. In 1967, the railroad was bought by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. The 1970's brought many problems. Decreased passenger traffic caused increasing monetary losses and the passenger was almost permanently discontinued. Today, the railway still continues both passenger and freight traffic across Northwest Indiana.
