CRA042 -- U.S. Steel Photograph Collection

Inventory

31.50 Linear Feet
December 1988

Scope and Content

The USS (U.S. Steel) Photograph Collection comprises nearly 1, 600 glass plate negatives and their prints. The images depict the erection and development of USS Gary Works from 1906 to 1941, with the major portion of the collection centering on the period 1906-1920. The photographs not only provide a detailed, unique visual record of the mill's complex growth, but also reveal the building of the City of Gary. Many images furnish information on company housing and Gary's North Side development, controlled by U.S. Steel Corporation's subsidiary, the Gary Land Company. In addition, shots of Gary schools are included as well as downtown landmarks, city parks, and the Gary Country Club.

The collection has been organized by the original numbering system established by the photographer. Where photographs lacked a number, or retained an unsequential number, images have been inserted in the sequence according to date. All of the original captions have been used in the collection and inventory. Boxes 1-99 contain the glass negatives; boxes 100-118 contain the prints.
