Scope and Content
These records document some aspects of Local 3008 of the United Steelworkers of America from 1952 to 1973. Unfortunately, the collection is incomplete. Company correspondence (1952-1959) deals with the day-to-day operations of the union office. Several files reveal information about the local's activities with the county, state, and international union offices and councils, such as reciprocal membership agreements. The membership gains and losses folders, along with the reconciliation reports, will provide researchers with some membership data from 1952 to 1959.
Of special interest is a set of affidavits designed to keep communists out of the union. The documents were produced during the height of the Cold War and offer an interesting reflection of that time. Picket lists (1952) may be of particular interest to labor studies students. Financial records include statements and tax reports, furnishing information on revenues and tax liabilities of the local. A minute book (1960-1966) includes membership lists as well as attendance records and financial statements.
Several files appear to have been produced by another local, USWA Local 2697. For example, a unique set of files cover the trials of union official A.B. Gibson, documenting some internal conflicts within Local 2697. A small series of records dealing with air pollution issues also came from that local.
