This collection (1949-1986) comprises two primary series of records. First, a group of public information files from Gary's Naval Reserve Training Center (1949-1971) contains press releases and local newspaper articles detailing information on enlistment, training activities, and procedures of the local U.S. Naval Reserve. A sub-series of USNR photographs compliments the PR files. (Michael Kapnas served over twenty-five years with the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserve, primarily as a public information officer). Second, a series of advertising account portfolios from the firm of Michael Kapnas and Associates offers helpful data on businesses and economic development in Merrillville--the files comprise newsclippings written by the Kapnas firm.
