Scope and Content
The USWA Local 6518 Records document the history of this LTV Hammond Plant Union from 1963 to 1987; the local dissolved when the plant closed in 1987. Minute books, grievance files, correspondence, and agreements constitute the collection. While the general correspondence lacks much substantive data, the series contains some references to civil rights. Grievance correspondence includes reports and notices of progress on particular cases and includes grievances relating to the 1974 Consent Decree. Of particular interest is a file of handwritten notes of Autrey Depew, Local 6518's president for most of the 1970s. The notes detail issues of concern and provide insight into Depew's style of unionism.
