CRA370 -- Peter Mandich Papers

Inventory

4.50 Linear Feet
September 1995

Revised February 2005

Abstract

Peter Mandich earned the distinction of being the first person in Gary history elected to successive terms as mayor of the steel city. Speeches, correspondence, scrapbooks, and photographs constitute the Peter Mandich Papers, offering documentation of the rise of ethnic politics in post WW II Gary. Campaign materials are particularly strong and cover not only Mr. Mandich but also many of his Club SAR colleagues in office. A 16mm film of the Gary Golden Jubilee parade of 1956 furnishes a striking visual record of the city’s heyday during the 1950s.
