Abstract
The Beulah Scoggins Papers comprises a scrapbook of newspaper clippings about Gary's African-American community. While many of the articles lack dates, the majority of clippings appear to document the period 1937 to 1952. Subjects of the newsarticles include various local families and leaders (such as Frank S. Delaney), politicians (such as Wilbur J. Hardaway), and musicians. Of special interest is a series of articles about the death of Walter J. Kelly, an alleged organized crime boss who oversaw "policy" in the city's black neighborhoods.
